The Basilica of Saint -Michel is one of the main places of Catholic worship in the city of Bordeaux in south -western France . Built from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, it is characteristic of the Gothic style .

Basilica sharing with St. Andrew's Cathedral the distinction of being with an independent tower or campanile of the sanctuary . Rising to a height of 114 meters - 99 meters under the old regime - it is considered the highest in the South of France. Base retains a crypt that was long an ossuary, then venue for "mummies" unearthed in the nineteenth century when the development of the site Meynard , former parish cemetery.

It became a minor basilica in 1903 and it is listed on the World Heritage list of UNESCO since 1998 under the road to St Jacques de Compostela.
