Lier is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp.

In 1369 Henry Mijs built the slender gothic belfry next to the cloth hall. The tower is a symbol of freedom and independence.

In the Middle Ages the town’s deeds and freedoms were kept in the belfries, as was the arsenal, and the town council’s assembly room was also to be found there. In the Belfry the clock hung and the storm bell that was rung in case of emergency. The arsenal was also housed here.
Since 1971, the belfry tower is a carillon with 23 bells small automatic.
Along with 23 other belfries it was recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999.
