Fectio was a Roman fortress (Latin: castellum) in the province of Lower Germany (Germania Inferior) on the northern border of the Roman Empire (the limes). The castellum was part of a belt of army camps (castra) and defense towers (turres). Fectio was then close to the place where the river Vecht split from the Rhine.
Today, the remains of it are located in Vechten immediately west of the Fort near Vechten, which was built around 1869 for the New Dutch Water Line. Below Fort bij Vechten were the remains of the camp village (vicus) that belonged to the castellum.
In 2016, the contours of the last built fortress were made visible in the landscape again in the form of a work of art. It contains texts, images and objects from Roman times.
Both the Fort Fectio and the later Fort bij Vechten belong to the world heritage. On January 9, 2021, a nomination file for the Lower Germanic limes as World Heritage, including the fortress, was presented to UNESCO.
